Minecraft Crop Farming Guide: How to Build a Simple 9×9 Farm

By JamaicanKyddUpdated

A crop farm is one of the first things worth building in Minecraft, and the basic rules have stayed the same through the new 26.x versions. This guide covers a simple 9×9 layout that feeds you with wheat, carrots, potatoes and more.

The four rules every farm follows

  1. Till the soil with a hoe. Use a hoe on a dirt or grass block to make farmland. Crops can only be planted on farmland, with nether wart being the exception.
  2. Keep water within 4 blocks. Farmland stays hydrated if water is within 4 blocks horizontally, on the same level or one block above. Hydrated farmland also helps crops grow faster. Rain can hydrate farmland too, but not reliably enough for a permanent farm.
  3. Keep the light level at 9 or higher. Dark spots slow or stop growth, so light the whole plot.
  4. Do not trample the farmland. Jumping on farmland turns it back into dirt and uproots the crop.

Build the 9×9 farm

  1. Mark out a 9×9 square on flat ground.
  2. Dig out the center block and place a water source in it. One water source in the middle hydrates every surrounding block in the 9×9 plot.
  3. Hoe the other 80 blocks into farmland.
  4. Plant your seeds, carrots or potatoes. Wheat, carrots, potatoes, beetroot, melons and pumpkins all grow on this setup, although melons and pumpkins need extra space next to the farmland to grow their fruit.
  5. Add lighting with torches or lanterns so nothing sits below light level 9.
  6. Fence the edge to keep mobs and your own jumping out of the crops.

Protect it from trampling

Cover the center water with a slab, lily pad or carpet so you cannot fall in and then jump out across your rows. Walk along the edges, or use path blocks, when you harvest.

If crops are not growing

The three usual causes are farmland that is not hydrated, a light level below 9 at the plant, or simply not waiting long enough. Check the dark or light color of the farmland first. Hydrated farmland looks darker. Bone meal can speed up growth on many crops.

Make it look good

Irrigation canals instead of hidden water blocks and path blocks between rows keep the farm attractive without changing how it works. If you want it to match your base, see our Minecraft build tips for using the newest blocks, or visit the Minecraft game page on GameGood.
